            "content_html": "<p>This year, for all its hardships, is shaping up to be the year of personal gains. I sincerely feel 2020 will be a net positive for me: I’m more confident than ever, I have a better understanding of myself, and I’ve finally found a person dearest to me.<\/p>\n<p>But I’m afraid my creative side is paying the price. My inability to express myself and to find—or create—anything evocative is continuing for many months. I’ve tried attributing it to burnout, lack of time, or general tiredness, but the problem seems to be bigger than any of these issues.<\/p>\n<p>It used to take just a little observation to make me research topics of my personal interest and jump straight to writing afterwards. Now, it became extremely hard and impractical to get myself inspired. For example, if I want to look at some events from few decades ago, I must allocate plenty of time, turn on some period-specific music, flip through tons of clips—and then I might (or might not) come close to the required state of mind.<\/p>\n<p>And we are talking about a scenario where I understand what I want to cover. Lately, I ended up staring at a screen for hours with no idea what I even want to do. To make things worse, museums and libraries—only venues which can surely put me in a proper mood—are either closed or, because of COVID-19 precautions, aren’t worth the risk of commuting through the city.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, that made me unhealthy envious of everyone whom I perceive to be a more prolific creator, getting annoyed by their weekly videos, book deals, huge portfolios, and event invitations. This is an inexcusable behavior towards many people whom I personally respect, and it does nothing but destroys what’s left of my enthusiasm.<\/p>\n<p>I don’t see a reasonable way to escape the situation. An unreasonable one is to take an obscenely long vacation and use it in lieu of a sabbatical. That would be highly irresponsible, and it’s not just me anymore whom I have to materially support. Leaving the issue alone won’t cut it either, as I <i>want<\/i> to remove whatever’s keeping me from covering my personal interests. Besides, I believe that, by not doing so, I am putting a limit on what I can achieve.<\/p>\n<p>This post is a cry for help. On behalf of me and all my stalled projects, I am asking you for any advice you’d find relevant.<\/p>\n",

            "content_html": "<p>For quite a long time, I’ve been struggling with finding any sort of pastime which wouldn’t be too similar to my main job. Sure, I love writing and contributing to various outlets, but I’d have to do something else to not go insane!<\/p>\n<p>Photography might be the only activity that I liked for as long as I dug the journalism. I’ve never progressed much, though, and I wouldn’t say I am able to continuously produce good photos—although I can sometimes make still worthy of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/90246716\/palms-progress-the-rise-fall-and-rebirth-of-a-legendary-brand\">brand<\/a>-<a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/articles\/retro-apple-computers-lenin-museum-russia\">name<\/a> publications. What’s more interesting is I’ve never owned a camera, having to lend one from relatives and friends instead.<\/p>\n<p>No, this isn’t going to be a GoFundMe announcement for a shiny new DSLR. Instead, I’m taking whatever I already have and, starting this week, trying to remember what kind of fun I was having with shooting and editing photos. To build both a skill and a healthy habit, I aim to consistently publish at least a few photos a week, complete with an analysis of my errors and a postmortem for each individual still. I <i>will<\/i> be making mistakes—that’s the whole point.<\/p>\n<p>I am going to post my photos on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ylitvinenko\">Twitter<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/ylitvinenko\/\">Instagram<\/a> Google Maps (when relevant), and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/ylitvinenko\">Flickr<\/a>, complete with the Creative Commons Attribution tag on the former. Most importantly, I will be using this blog to vivisect my work and compare edited photos with the originals. (Please report me if there are some problems with fancy comparison galleries.)<\/p>\n<h2>Tools I’m using<\/h2>\n<div class=\"e2-text-picture\">\n<img src=\"https:\/\/blog.ylitvinenko.com\/pictures\/tools@2x.jpg\" width=\"1012\" height=\"562\" alt=\"\" \/>\n<\/div>\n<p>Mobile photography has come a long way since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/ylitvinenko\/albums\/72157697842362061\">whatever it was<\/a> in the early 2000s. Most importantly, even mid-range photos can now do adequate stills. For the project, I will be using the new Samsung Galaxy A71 which comes with a whole bunch of sensors and lenses. Right now, I will let all the “AI” (read: re-branded auto modes) do the groundwork for me, but I do aspire to switch to the manual mode when needed.<\/p>\n<p>The post-processing will be done on the 5th-generation iPad Mini, suited with Affinity Photo and an Apple Pencil. I’ve edited enough photos using GIMP and a laggy mouse, so I’m going to treat myself to the comfort of the post-PC environment. Besides, while I’m only learning to use the Affinity Photo, I already appreciate its balance between a full-fledged editor and a collection of easy-to-apply filters (which, thank God, automatically go to their own layers and do not bake into the image unless you’ve ordered them to).<\/p>\n<p>With that cleared up, let’s see what I was able to do this Saturday.<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/flickr.com\/photos\/ylitvinenko\/49509955928\/\">Some seeds<\/a><\/h2>\n<div style=\"padding:75% 0 0 0;position:relative;\"><iframe frameborder=\"0\" class=\"juxtapose\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.knightlab.com\/libs\/juxtapose\/latest\/embed\/index.html?uid=66768ba6-4abf-11ea-b9b8-0edaf8f81e27\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><p>The Galaxy A71 does not have a telephoto lens or optical zoom, which is a shame. Samsung does try to make up for that by offering a macro sensor—the first in the industry, from what I get. It’s arguably the least useful camera in the four-piece set, but that did not prevent me from taking a few pictures with it. Shooting flowers would be the best case for it, but in February, bird feed in the park will do the job.<\/p>\n<p>This is one photo that turned out fine composition-wise. Even if it was in need of cropping, I wouldn’t be able to do much with a 5-megapixel file. However, as I was trying to compensate for the early evening dusk, I’ve overblown the colors on the photo. Millet now looks like tiny oranges under a bad Instagram filter, and the sense of frost is gone completely. I will have to be way more careful with color correction.<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/flickr.com\/photos\/ylitvinenko\/49509955898\/\">Apartment complex near the Troparyovo station<\/a><\/h2>\n<div style=\"padding:135% 0 0 0;position:relative;\"><iframe frameborder=\"0\" class=\"juxtapose\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.knightlab.com\/libs\/juxtapose\/latest\/embed\/index.html?uid=7132c978-4ac0-11ea-b9b8-0edaf8f81e27\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><p>That one was physically fun to do, as the shooting involved hiking through the field of snow and basically sticking the phone in it. As I was unable to look at the screen in detail, I relied on automatic guides to check whether the horizon is skewed. The phone did guide me—and made the building look like the Tower of Pisa.<\/p>\n<p>Aside from rotating the photo, I’ve digitally removed some on sticks and objects from the snow. I could have done a better job, especially on the spot right below the metro station on the left. Colors are fine, compared to the first picture, although the harsh shadows on the building and smudges in the sky bother me a bit. All things considered, I think it’s an alright photo, if visually uninteresting.<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/flickr.com\/photos\/ylitvinenko\/49510465336\/\">Vorobyovy Gory, Entrance 3<\/a><\/h2>\n<div style=\"padding:75% 0 0 0;position:relative;\"><iframe frameborder=\"0\" class=\"juxtapose\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;\"  src=\"https:\/\/cdn.knightlab.com\/libs\/juxtapose\/latest\/embed\/index.html?uid=c0dcffcc-4ac3-11ea-b9b8-0edaf8f81e27\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><p>This might be my most favorite photo of the bunch. Colorful lights right behind me reflected beautifully on an industrial-looking bridge-cum-station. I even managed to now screw them up! However, by relying on the rule of thirds too formally, I’ve left too little space to the pink area on the top. I should have realized that the second and third parts are too similar in color, with the asphalt floor being absent of anything visually interesting. Anyway, I find myself really attached to the result—maybe I’ll return to the original photo (or the spot) in the future.<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/flickr.com\/photos\/ylitvinenko\/49510465186\/\">Kommunarka Metro Station<\/a><\/h2>\n<div style=\"padding:75% 0 0 0;position:relative;\"><iframe frameborder=\"0\" class=\"juxtapose\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.knightlab.com\/libs\/juxtapose\/latest\/embed\/index.html?uid=19965b72-4ac4-11ea-b9b8-0edaf8f81e27\"><\/iframe>\n<div><p>In this photo, a similar composition worked better due to the better variety of colors. It’s also the one which I’ve spent the least time with in the Affinity Photo. I’ve mostly fixed the geometry and retouched parts which got smudged by the phone’s software (note the left border of the column’s base, as well as the train’s roof above the first door). The whole station is a delight, but I’ll return there only once I’ll become more skilled.<\/p>\n<p>Here goes the first week of what I’ll try to do on a regular basis—if only for the sake of my sanity. If you spot some bad practices, feel free to guide me away from them! I would also appreciate it if you pinpoint something you’ve liked and note what exactly has grabbed your attention.<\/p>\n",

            "title": "How to Embed Creative Commons Metadata in Office Documents",
            "content_html": "<div class=\"e2-text-picture\">\n<img src=\"https:\/\/blog.ylitvinenko.com\/pictures\/ccexcel.jpg\" width=\"1735\" height=\"974\" alt=\"\" \/>\n<\/div>\n<p>Photographers, artists, and writers use Creative Commons licenses to open their work to the worldwide community. But how would you do the same with your Microsoft Word document?<\/p>\n<p>Technically, you don’t have to do anything special to release files made in Microsoft Office under Creative Commons license: just choose the variant you are comfortable with, print its name in the document itself and give a link to the license. <a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/choose\/\">A wizard<\/a> on the Creative Commons web site can even generate the most preferable legalese.<\/p>\n<p>But while this might be enough for humans, algorithms scraping the Internet for CC-licensed content need specially formatted descriptions. Machine-readable metadata is what search engines rely on when you limit the results to CC-licensed works only. On the Web, metadata are usually embedded in the HTML code using the RDFa format. Files generated by Adobe software, from images to PDF documents, use XMP profiles instead.<\/p>\n<p>Back in 2006, Microsoft released <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/download\/details.aspx?id=13303\">an add-in<\/a> for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint which allowed to mark documents with machine-readable Creative Commons license. Originally designed for Ofice XP\/2003 and 2007, it was updated over time to provide support for versions up to 2013. However, if you have anything newer than that, the installer found on Microsoft’s web site will refuse to work.<\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, the workaround does exist, and I’ve personally tested it with the latest, x64-based monthly build of Office 365. But, from my experience, here are just two mentions of it on the Internet, and both of them are not available in English. In this post, I’ll give a loose translation of <a href=\"https:\/\/mahara.ticfga.ca\/artefact\/artefact.php?view=302&artefact=28204\">a French blog post<\/a> (which, in turn, is a translation from <a href=\"http:\/\/jedi.org\/blog\/archives\/006168.html\">Chinese<\/a>), as well as an overview of the tool.<\/p>\n<h2>How to install Creative Commons add-in for Microsoft Office 2016 and later<\/h2>\n<ol start=\"1\">\n<li>Install <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/download\/details.aspx?id=23656\">Microsoft Visual Studio Tools<\/a> for the Microsoft Office system (version 3.0 Runtime) (x86), Please note that you need to install the 32-bit version, no matter which platform your Windows or Office installation for.<\/li>\n<li>Update them with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/download\/details.aspx?id=1132\">Service Pack 1<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>You’ll need the add-in files from the system it was already installed on. (Alternatively, you may use <a href=\"https:\/\/1drv.ms\/u\/s!AtHDg7ZqvRPaoMUT3tAMkPSEypHPuA\">this archive<\/a>; while I’ve tested it, you shouldn’t usually trust strangers offering you executables.) Copy the folder from the archive to <b>C:\\Program Files (x86)<\/b> folder, or <b>C:\\Program Files<\/b> for 32-bit Windows.<\/li>\n<li>Import keys from three registry files (for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint respectively) from <a href=\"https:\/\/1drv.ms\/u\/s!AtHDg7ZqvRPaoMUSU2NwM-JmGp6Gzw\">this archive<\/a>. You may need to edit them to omit the <b>(x86)<\/b> if you are running a 32-bit version of Windows.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Creative Commons add-in should now load on the next startup of Office apps it was made for.<\/p>\n<h2>How to license Microsoft Office files under Creative Commons<\/h2>\n<p>You’ll notice the To use a Creative Commons license, you need to download it first by selecting <b>Licenses > New License…<\/b> Unless you are dedicating the document to the public domain, the wizard asks you several questions: whether you are allowing commercial uses; what’s your modification policy; and what is the jurisdiction of the license you are going to apply. (Be sure to not select deprecated CC Sampling license.)<\/p>\n<p>After the license is downloaded, you may apply it by clicking <b>Licenses<\/b> and selecting it from the dropdown list. The licensing works a bit different in Word compared to Excel and PowerPoint. With spreadsheets and presentations, the metadata are embedded in the document itself, and the visual data (Creative Commons button and the legal notice) can be changed or replaced. In Word, however, both visual and metadata are kept in a single locked field. While this provides greater security, it might result in a language disparity if the document itself is not in English. To remove the field, you have to use the <b>Document Licensed<\/b> button.<\/p>\n<div class=\"e2-text-picture\">\n<img src=\"https:\/\/blog.ylitvinenko.com\/pictures\/cword.png\" width=\"847\" height=\"671\" alt=\"\" \/>\n<\/div>\n<h2>What it may be useful for?<\/h2>\n<p>Despite the tool being supported throughout the lifespan of five Office versions, the adoption of CC-licensed Microsoft Office documents is virtually nonexistent. Fiddling with search operators in Google revealed that, out of several dozen Word files with Creative Commons metadata, most of them were actually clippings of Wikipedia articles and other free web content.<\/p>\n<p>Uploading Office files for public use when PDF files would suffice is an Internet <i>mauvais ton<\/i>. Still, using the add-in might be useful where interactivity matters — in feature-rich PowerPoint presentations and, most notably, complex Excel spreadsheets. And for me, it’s just nice to see one of the most prominent file formats in computing supporting Creative Commons on a technical level — even if few efforts were made in this regard since 2006.<\/p>\n",

            "title": "Microsoft Kin Creators Reflect on What Was Cut and Planned",
            "content_html": "<div class=\"e2-text-picture\">\n<img src=\"https:\/\/blog.ylitvinenko.com\/pictures\/kin.jpg\" width=\"998\" height=\"562\" alt=\"\" \/>\n<\/div>\n<p>It’s impossible for a company as prolific as Microsoft to not make at least a few stinkers. But their first attempt to release a mobile phone under their own brand could not be described as anything but a disaster. Kin phones, released at the dawn of the current mobile landscape, were discontinued just six weeks after their US launch. It took a multitude of factors to make it fail — the feature set was not great for a targeted demographic, the competition was strong, and Verizon’s plans were just too steep.<\/p>\n<p>Behind the story of a giant company releasing a dud (don’t we all love them, if only instinctively?) lies another one — of hard work and hopes for the future. For all its cons, Kin’s deep social integration, if implemented better, could make a difference in a bloodbath of 2010 mobile phone market.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of making a summary of what we already know of Kin, I’ve decided to talk to people involved in its creation. Not only they shed more light on why Kin turned out to be the way it was, but also showed Microsoft was interested in evolving their phones over time — if only they didn’t flop.<\/p>\n<h2>Three-dimensional UI: too much for first-gen Tegra?<\/h2>\n<p>Microsoft had the presence in the mobile market since the 1990s, licensing their Windows CE operating system to device manufacturers. Kin One and Kin Two, on the other hand, were the company’s first attempts at releasing its own complete product. They were not traditional smartphones, though, but feature phones with touch controls and a subset of iPhone and Android functionality.<\/p>\n<p>In 2010, before the influx of cheap Android handsets, it was yet sensible to release so-called “touch phones.” Kin phones and their contracts, however, weren’t cheap, and the platform, being targeted to teens and tweens, notably lacked features vital to the digital generation — Internet chats, for example.<\/p>\n<p>The software issues could realistically be resolved over time, as Microsoft implemented an over-the-air update system. The hardware, though, was here to stay, and the choice of components raised the eyebrows even back then. Kin phones marked the first time Tegra, Nvidia’s system-on-a-chip, was used in a mobile phone. But it was the aging APX 2600 chip, first used in Microsoft’s Zune HD media player, while devices powered by next-generation Tegra <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/urnidgns852573c40069388000257703005ff13c\/microsofts-kin-are-the-first-tegra-smartphones-idUS364774929120100413\">were already announced<\/a> at that point.<\/p>\n<p>The chip might be one of the causes for performance woes, documented well enough in regards to both final and pre-release hardware. In 2012, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/2012\/11\/unreleased-internal-microsoft-videos-show-why-kin-crashed-and-burned\/\">Wired<\/a> obtained internal videos showing how poorly the system responded to swipes and touches, among other things.<\/p>\n<iframe src=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/embed\/kin-internal\" width=\"100%\" height=\"400\" frameborder=\"0\" webkitallowfullscreen=\"true\" mozallowfullscreen=\"true\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p class=\"foot\">The videos have vanished from the source by now. One of them was uploaded to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ff10KVcbC10\">YouTube<\/a>; I’ve mirrored it to the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/kin-internal\">Internet Archive<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It’s hard to imagine the UI was initially going to be way more visually impressive. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hunterdesign.io\/\">Erik Hunter<\/a>, who was working for a design studio Method at the time, was responsible for the UI motion design of Kin phones. According to him, Method and Kin’s lead designers collaborated on creating a three-dimensional, motion-rich UI. The look, featuring a drastically different design language, is shown on Hunter’s web site.<\/p>\n<p>“There were lots of interactions which didn’t end being developed, like the motion on the lock screen, the Spot [sharing widget] icon animation, and the scrolling tiles. Most of the interactions and animations we designed ended up not being possible,” says Hunter, citing the processing power and the features being cut in development.<\/p>\n<p>One of the visual features implemented at some point was the 3D effect on the Loop, a home screen displaying social media updates. <a href=\"http:\/\/chrisfurniss.com\/\">Chris Furniss<\/a>, responsible for implementing the UI on device with XAML and Silverlight, was involved in downscaling the designers’ vision to what the hardware was able to do.<\/p>\n<p>“The UI, in general, had a cool parallax effect as you swiped back and forth, or scrolled up and down through your social feed. That had to be cut, which affected the way text had to be layered over photos and so forth,” Furniss explains.<\/p>\n<div style=\"padding:56.25% 0 0 0;position:relative;\"><iframe src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/42425239\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;\" frameborder=\"0\" webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><script src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/api\/player.js\"><\/script>\n<p class=\"foot\">The 3D effect can be seen at 0:20 mark of <a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/42425239\">the video<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Intelligent Spot and prospects of Kin Three<\/h2>\n<p>The eye candy wasn’t the only thing that had to be cut. The video above shows the Spot, one of Kin’s trademark features, featuring a dashboard filled with sections and features. In the final version, all it could do is to serve as a drag-and-drop target for SMS, MMS, and email attachments. Even without any social media integration, it was seen as one of the most clever features of the phones.<\/p>\n<p>The concept video, however, shows the Spot not only sending photos to Facebook or Twitter, but serving as a system scrapbook, storing reminders and sets of objects to share. According to Furniss, it was supposed to be even more than that; “a context-sensitive bucket which you could drop anything into and Kin would figure what you were intending.”<\/p>\n<p>“We were never given a reason for why the Spot wasn’t as powerful as we originally designed it,” Hunter adds. He points to the internal conflict between Microsoft’s managers and multiple mobile teams, reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2010\/07\/02\/life-and-death-of-microsoft-kin-the-inside-story\/\">Engadget<\/a> at the time, but did not confirm it from his own perspective.<\/p>\n<div class=\"e2-text-picture\">\n<img src=\"https:\/\/blog.ylitvinenko.com\/pictures\/kin2.jpg\" width=\"1299\" height=\"730\" alt=\"\" \/>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"foot\">Kin Two had twice the memory over Kin One, as well as better camera.<\/p>\n<p>Kin has almost instantly built the image of a teenager phone — and that’s the case for oddly-shaped Kin One, marketed to pre-teens and teens. Furniss describes that the Kin Two model, looking like a contemporary QWERTY side slider and having better specifications, was aimed at a 25- to 35-year-olds. (Notably, according to him, Kin One was specifically designed to appeal to the female audience, with Kin Two being a “men’s phone.”)<\/p>\n<p>But looking forward, Microsoft and its partners were already planning to reach another demographic. A third developer, who decided to remain anonymous due to NDAs, shared that Kin lineup was going to evolve as the audience captured by first-generation models changed their taste.<\/p>\n<p>“If Microsoft Kin is a mobile device designed specifically for a younger, millennial audience, our job was to think about how the device needs to change as this audience becomes older,” they describe their role in the project.  The source states their team researched the potential new audience and outline new features for the future Kin.<\/p>\n<p>The work made by the developer was left unused, as Microsoft embarrassingly discontinued Kin over its low sales. Later that year, unsold phones got a revised firmware which, stripping social and cloud aspects, allowed to resell them as souped-up dumb phones. The failure of Kin, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/microsoft-rank-and-file-felt-embarassment-all-over-campus-from-kin-failure-2010-7\">Business Insider<\/a>, sank the morale within Microsoft.<\/p>\n<p>“Leading up to the launch date of Kin, we were really excited. We were all in creative brainstorm mode for the next big thing, and spirits were high,” recalls Furniss the mood across his team just before the historically poor performance.<\/p>\n<p>“We were given lots of room to explore and encouraged to push the boundaries of what can be done in a traditional mobile UI,” says Hunter from his point of view as Method employee.<\/p>\n<h2>The last app-less smartphone<\/h2>\n<p>Not only Kin phones had not held their value upon release, but they were also out in the most unlikely of times — both by Microsoft’s mobile divisions and the industry as a whole. Windows Mobile, Microsoft’s legacy mobile OS, was on its last legs, with people having high hopes for all-new Windows Phone. Kin’s mobile platform, having no app support as the world was captivated by them, looked out of place both in the market and in Microsoft’s pipeline.<\/p>\n<p>“When Kin was being designed, it was before this huge paradigm shift to consuming everything via platform-specific apps... I don’t think the social media consumers of today are of the same mindset, they are too used to download specific apps for specific services,” reflects Furniss on how Kin, having no social media clients, embedded their feeds in the UI itself.<\/p>\n<p>On a smaller scale, the idea of unified feed was transferred into Windows Phone, as the People app had a “What’s New” screen showing social media updates. But in 2015, as Facebook had to discontinue one of its APIs due to privacy concerns, Microsoft <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2015\/6\/8\/8746857\/microsoft-windows-facebook-integration-not-supported\">terminated<\/a> Facebook integration, with apps like Twitter and LinkedIn dropping it afterward because of the public’s general disinterest. In 2018, commenting on yet another privacy scandals, Facebook called early system integrations “<a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.fb.com\/news\/2018\/06\/why-we-disagree-with-the-nyt\/\">Facebook-like experiences<\/a>.” The choice of words has clearly separated Facebook as used with apps and browsers and deep system integrations.<\/p>\n<p>Kin phones were the only ones which fully bet on experiences, not apps. From Windows Phone to even more obscure platforms like BlackBerry 10 or Nokia Asha, it was usually a combination of two. The most recent feature phone platform, KaiOS, does not even try integrating social media it the system — but it has an app store and support for web apps.<\/p>\n<p>To win that bet, Kin had to either be as good as planned or cost as much as it deserved. Unfortunately for everyone involved in its creation, it did neither.<\/p>\n",

            "content_html": "<div class=\"e2-text-picture\">\n<img src=\"https:\/\/blog.ylitvinenko.com\/pictures\/lemoncompose.jpg\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" alt=\"\" \/>\n<\/div>\n<p>Contributing authors are dangerous to any media with a user platform — at least if neglected by the editor.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, Lizzy Saxe, a Forbes contributor writing about food and business, submitted an article headlined “<a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20190214202552\/https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/lizzysaxe\/2019\/02\/14\/want-to-find-a-rich-person-in-russia-look-for-the-lemons\/\">Want To Find A Rich Person In Russia? Look For The Lemons.<\/a>” In the article, Harold Edwards, the CEO of a California-based agricultural company Limoneira expressed his theory of high demand for lemons in Russia. If lemons can’t grow there, he deducted, they should cost a lot, so Russians must use them to “communicate to people that they have the means to be able to afford them.”<\/p>\n<p>Apparently, when I brewed some lemon tea, I was a “wealthy Russian” who “incorporates lemons into my lifestyle.”<\/p>\n<p>The article, while being featured on Forbes’ social media and getting around 25,000 hits by the time of writing, seems to be mostly ignored by the US media. It’s not really a well-researched article to pick up seriously; the piece was based solely on claims of Limoneira’s CEO, with 7 out of 11 paragraphs, the lead one included, featuring him or the company in a positive light.<\/p>\n<p>As the author hadn’t bothered to check whether Edwards was right, the story was widely ridiculed in Russia both on social media and by press outlets. Lemons are, of course, not a “bling of produce” in the country. With the average retail cost of 117.40 rubles per kg in December 2018 (1.74 US$, or around 13 rubles cheaper than a Big Mac), lemons are three times cheaper than in the US, going by US Department of Agriculture’s annual data.<\/p>\n<h2>Soviet tradition with imperial roots<\/h2>\n<p>While the reasoning was wrong, local analysts confirm the claim which sparked it. According to AB-Centre, an agriculture think tank, Russia is the second biggest importer of lemons, with the top one being the US. With the purchase amount of 213,000 ton in 2018, the sector has not only recovered after the Russian monetary crisis of 2014–2015 but set the all-time record. Analysts note there wasn’t any notable downfall to recover from, though. With price changes not affecting the demand, importers got away with only the slight reduction of the supply.<\/p>\n<p>“The consumption pattern is traditional for Russian culture,” notes Alexei Plugov, AB-Centre’s General Director. “For example, the most popular folk remedy during the flu is to drink lots of lemon tea. It’s similar to tangerines as traditional New Year treats, with most countries not incorporating then into holiday dishes.”<\/p>\n<div class=\"e2-text-picture\">\n<img src=\"https:\/\/blog.ylitvinenko.com\/pictures\/podstakannik@2x.jpg\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" alt=\"\" \/>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"foot\">A glass of lemon tea in <i>podstakannik<\/i> became a staple of train travels in Russia. For most older Russians, the strong connection between tangerines and New Year celebrations goes back to the Soviet Union, with its short supply to imported fruit. To meet at least some demand for citruses, Russia had to rely on its own resources — or on the resources of other Soviet republics.<\/p>\n<p>Raisa Kulyan, head of the laboratory of fruit crops selection at Russian Research Institute of Floriculture and Subtropical Crops, points to Georgia as the Soviet Union’s main supplier of both lemons and tangerines. Plains of Abkhasia were more suitable for growing lemons on the open field then Krasnodar Krai, the only subtropical region of independent Russia.<\/p>\n<p>“There were more territories, and the subtropical zone was wider. Nowadays, we are limited by Adler and Sochi regions [of Krasnodar Krai],” she says, lamenting the mountainous terrain of Russian subtropics.<\/p>\n<p>The researcher notes we shouldn’t attribute the popularity of lemons in Russia solely to Soviet distribution chains. “Historical background is crucial for their popularity. Not without reason people were growing lemons on their windowsills during the time of Peter the Great,” Kulyan referred to Pavlovo lemonarium near Nizhny Novgorod, in the centre of European Russia.<\/p>\n<p>First mentions of lemons in Russian go beyond the history of the Russian Empire, back to the time of tzars. <i>Domostroy<\/i>, a 16th-century collection of household rules, mentions recipes and remedies using lemons. Being a popular work, it shows the citrus was not an unwitnessed fruit even for low-ranking nobles.<\/p>\n<h2>The quest for Russian lemons<\/h2>\n<p>Despite the attempts of local farmers, it’s impossible to stumble upon homegrown lemons in Russian stores. Last year, local manufacturers have just entered the market at the level of the country — as a blip on the chart, with the share less than 0.01%. But Kulyan states more entrepreneurs are interested in growing lemons locally.<\/p>\n<p>According to the scientist, all it takes for lemons to grow is the temperature above 5 °C (41 °F) during the winter — a goal achievable with heated or plastic-sheet greenhouses even in southern Siberia. The most suitable for moderate climate is the Meyer lemon, she says; the low-growing, undemanding cultivar notable for its orange cortex.<\/p>\n<div class=\"e2-text-picture\">\n<img src=\"https:\/\/blog.ylitvinenko.com\/pictures\/tashkent.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" alt=\"\" \/>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"foot\">Georgiy Siverskiy, an Usbek farmer. Credit: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fergananews.com\/articles\/4479\">IA Ferghana<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In Uzbekistan, a country in Central Asia on the south from Russia, local farmers even adopted them for growing without greenhouses. To shield lemons from cold winds, they grow them in trenches. Bringing them to Russia as “Tashkent lemons,” exporters hope to meet the demand once taken by Spanish and Greek manufacturers barred from selling produce to Russia by economic sanctions. But with a 0.3% share of imported lemons, they have to go a long way — and face Turkey and Argentine keeping more than three-fourths of the production.<\/p>\n<p>To the possible dismay of the head of Limoneira, who claimed Russian favor Californian lemons over any other kind, there was no official import of lemons from the US in both 2017 and 2018.<\/p>\n<h2>Add some yellow to a greenback<\/h2>\n<p>Joking and being curious simultaneously, some Russians thought Edwards was confused by a Russian vernacular. Popularized in the 1990s, “lemon” means “million” of dollars or rubles in thieves’ slang. With the last syllable stressed, both words sound similar in Russian, with “lemon” being some sort of mangled shortening. According to two philologists reached by a Russian newspaper <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aif.ru\/society\/history\/pochemu_odin_million_rubley_nazyvayut_limon\">Argumenty i Fakty<\/a><\/i>, the word first appeared during the Russian Civil War of 1917–1922 accompanied by the depreciation of the ruble. As the Soviet Union collapsed, more people got access to once unimaginable sums of money, reviving the word in process.<\/p>\n<p>The most crucial point right now is, the word got another meaning just for brevity. According to the Leonid Belovinsky, Doctor of History, there was no analogy with actual lemons.<\/p>\n<div class=\"e2-text-picture\">\n<img src=\"https:\/\/blog.ylitvinenko.com\/pictures\/lemons@2x.jpg\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" alt=\"\" \/>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"foot\">Lemons growing in Bryansk Oblast. While the article has started just as an exercise in fact checking, it has provided me with a different point of view on a mundane ingredient. And when this rare opportunity appears, you want to be as focused as possible.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after Christmas, at the beginning of Russia’s long public holidays, I’ve tweeted the picture below. It might be a bog-standard New Year post, but there’s a certain oddity in the attached photo: I’ve began 2019 by showing off an iBook G4, made in 2004, not only up and running, but ready for actual work to do on. Indeed, this is the computer I actually work on every time it’s realistically possible, both at home, in the library, or at the café.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">It&#39;s New Year and Christmas holidays in Russia, which means I can go on a sabbatical of sorts. But why would I do this, and why would you want to?<\/p>\n<h2>A typewriter that’s got ambitions<\/h2>\n<p>While I’m keen on old gadgets, I’d be lying if I said they are still as good as they were back on their release date. Sure, every now and then, someone dreams of abandoning a modern phone for a device of yore — the one which holds a charge for a month and doesn’t bother anyone with notifications. The idea, though, falls flat on its face the moment someone actually takes an old Siemens and tries to type a text.<\/p>\n<p>We might live in a crapsack connected world where everyone battles for our data and engagement, but in general, technology did become more capable and easy-to-use. However, since people still feel the urge to distance themselves from modern tech annoyances, there is a market for that. From well-being modes in operating systems to smart feature phones both cheap and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.punkt.ch\/en\/products\/mp02-4g-mobile-phone\/\">premium<\/a>, a lot of companies want to sell you the idea of a balance between a no-frills approach and modern connectivity options. After all, not being able to go to the Internet, even on weekdays, is just not an option for most of us.<\/p>\n<p>I had no idea an old PowerPC Mac is going to struck the exact balance. What I needed and expected from it is a cheap way to type on the go — a bare minimum for a notebook complimenting a modern desktop PC. The iBook, which was as cheap as a beaten-up Eee PC, was in a reasonable condition and had a fresh battery, and I’d be perfectly fine even if it could only open and save text files.<\/p>\n<p>For some twisted reason, it gave me much more than I expected from a 2004 computer running an OS from 2007. (Could you imagine using Windows Vista on an Intel Pentium M, right now?) Maybe it’s the robustness of Mac OS X, a system I’ve had no prior experience in, or the community trying to keep PowerPC Macs as useful as possible. There is a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.floodgap.com\/software\/tenfourfox\/\">TenFourFox<\/a> project which makes an up-to-date web browser based on Firefox, as well as a <a href=\"https:\/\/sourceforge.net\/projects\/leopard-webkit\/\">newer version of WebKit<\/a> you can patch Safari and other programs with. You won’t get all the bells and whistles of the modern Web, and the performance is a bit poor, but it’s alright for looking things up without messing up with the workflow. I’ve also updated spellchecker dictionaries with <a href=\"http:\/\/people.ict.usc.edu\/~leuski\/cocoaspell\/\">cocoAspell<\/a>, installed <a href=\"https:\/\/ilyabirman.net\/projects\/typography-layout\/\">Ilya Birman’s keyboard layout<\/a> for consistency with my PCs, and made a bunch of other tweaks.<\/p>\n<p>But what’s really impressive is how well some things work without any tinkering at all. I’m not even talking about applications with no or few online components, like Pages ‘09 or old builds of f.lux, but about things like iTunes — which still connects to iTunes Store, downloads purchased music and, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FuryLacher\/status\/1040894010703978498\">the iBook’s previous owner<\/a>, translates it via AirPlay. Evernote, a popular note-taking service, managed to shock me with how well its PowerPC Mac client works today — provided you can find the original executable. On its first launch, it politely tells you it’s the last version to support Mac OS X Leopard, and the voice memo recording is disabled on PowerPC, but aside from that, it works and syncs just as you’d expect. It might be even better, as the client doesn’t register towards the limit of clients for the free plan. Even Adobe Digital Edition, as bad as it’s in itself, still allows me to check out books from Internet Archive’s Open Library.<\/p>\n<div class=\"e2-text-picture\">\n<img src=\"https:\/\/blog.ylitvinenko.com\/pictures\/osxleopard.png\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" alt=\"\" \/>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"foot\">The 4:3 screen makes more sense for doing actual work than the widescreen one. The Verge’s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/circuitbreaker\/2018\/4\/19\/17027286\/laptop-widescreen-aspect-ratio\">Vlad Savov<\/a> thinks the same.<\/p>\n<p>Sure, it’s easier to list what iBook G4 can do in 2019 than to name what it cannot — but that’s the entire point. You can browse the Internet, but you can’t procrastinate on YouTube your entire day; you can check your mail, but you’d be hard-pressed to use social media. The elusive middle ground between not being able to do some work and not <i>feeling<\/i> like you need to do it is here, running on a well-built, laconic hardware. It’s not aluminum PowerBook G4, but it’s nice enough.<\/p>\n<h2>Where’s the Nokia Booklet 4G, though?<\/h2>\n<p>But no matter how much we would like to see our gadgets work forever, it isn’t going to happen. I expect Evernote to stop working eventually and browser backports to be abandoned — it’s just something you have to keep in mind when talking about software and services. There is a sad tale of a devoted user who kept patching Dropbox client to work on PowerPC Macs but gave up as it kept being updated; “I don’t feel any strength to work with that problem”, <a href=\"https:\/\/forums.macrumors.com\/threads\/reconnect-unsupported-leopard-snow-leopard-macs-to-dropbox.1865621\/page-14#post-26096038\">they said<\/a> after almost two years.<\/p>\n<p>The hardware degrades, too, not to mention it’s not really reasonable anymore to carry a 2.2 kg of plastic and silicon everywhere you might want to write. But what to replace it with: a 12-inch MacBook, an iPad Pro, or maybe a 13-inch MacBook Pro from 2015 – the last one with a decent keyboard?<\/p>\n<p>Each of the options comes with its own weaknesses, but all of them, including the iOS device, are far more capable than their distant predecessor. A testament of technical progress it is, but when we are talking about distraction-free workstations, there is nothing on the market.             "title": "Let’s Remember Media PCs and Their Path to Nowhere",
            "content_html": "<div class=\"e2-text-picture\">\n<img src=\"https:\/\/blog.ylitvinenko.com\/pictures\/xpc_livingroom@2x.jpg\" width=\"1002\" height=\"564\" alt=\"\" \/>\n<\/div>\n<p>If there is one reason we don’t hear the term “post-PC world” as often as we used to, it’s because it is already built. The pendulum of history has swung back, and classic PCs has found themselves in the same position they were up to mid-1990s – as productivity tools or toys for tech enthusiasts. Most of actual “personal computing” now happens in our phones, or, to be more correct, on someone else’s server both phones and PCs get access to.<\/p>\n<p>Nowadays, when a person buys a computer, they usually have specific tasks in mind which they are going to use a PC for. It might be gaming, media editing, or even a simple word processing; the point is not the complexity of a task, but the fact this task is actually defined and formulated. While PCs are as multipurpose as they were for decades, few people or companies make the purchase decision thinking, “I’m going to make my computer <i>do everything.<\/i>”<\/p>\n<p>But people used to do so — and tech companies had built the entire category of goods just on this promise. Both users and manufacturers tried to make a PC a central home appliance, putting it in a fancy but still oversized set-top box and calling it a “home theater PC” or “digital entertainment center.” The idea was to replace all specialized media appliances in a household, such as DVD players and jukeboxes, with a computer a little bit friendlier than the one on a desk.<\/p>\n<h2>Of mices and remotes<\/h2>\n<p>By the year 2000, the computing industry has been toying with the “media PC” concept for quite a while. CD-ROMs allowed distributing digitized audio, video, and photos, which led to the popularity of the concept of “multimedia.” While computers could play audio CDs just fine, the general media experience could not yet be directly compared with the one provided by VCRs and Hi-Fi equipment. Instead, multimedia applications differentiated themselves by combining different media into unified sets of data. Classic examples of those datasets are CD-ROM encyclopedias: titles like Microsoft Encarta mixed up text articles with illustrations, bits of audio, video clips, and even interactive 3D models.<\/p>\n<p>At that point, multimedia wasn’t going to disrupt any industries, no matter how hard creators of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdplusg.com\/cdplusg\/Main.html\">CD+G<\/a> had probably hoped for that. Things changed when it became possible to rip music CDs, compress the data tenfold, and keep the audio on a hard drive track by track. Creating custom playlists, once a tedious process only possible with magnetic media, became essential for music consumption and, several years later, led to world-shattering iTunes Store “pay per song” business model.<\/p>\n<p>That’s when PCs companies started making their first media computers. Such devices as iPAQ Music Center and HP de100c were made just to rip CDs, store music and, for some added value, play Internet radio. Neither of them or their direct successors became even remotely popular: just like Internet appliances, they were seen as a vastly inferior option to whatever cheap computer your favorite retailer was stocking.<\/p>\n<iframe src=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/embed\/g4tv.com-video3904\" width=\"100%\" height=\"400\" frameborder=\"0\" webkitallowfullscreen=\"true\" mozallowfullscreen=\"true\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p class=\"foot\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/g4tv.com-video3904\">archived<\/a> TechTV clip shows Compaq iPAQ Music Center in action.<\/p>\n<p>Things notably changed in 2003, when DVD drives for PCs became widely available. Somewhat surprisingly, it wasn’t DVD which sparked the media PC boom. While the desire for high-quality video playback fueled it, what really set the trend were “barebone PC” configurations introduced mostly by Taiwanese OEMs. Barebones were partially assembled computing platforms, including everything but RAM, a hard drive, and, in some cases, a processor. Notably, most barebones were introduced in a compact form factor which heavily resembled ordinary jukeboxes. For DIY enthusiasts, fed up with PC towers as Apple popularized all-in-one machines, this was a breath of fresh air.<\/p>\n<p>Barebone computers – most notably, Intel NUC models, – are still relatively popular, and those who want to build a computer from scratch can now choose from a variety of compact cases and motherboards. But you won’t find anymore a barebone as similar to a media center as MSI MegaPC. Being one of the first configurations of its kind, it had a front-panel display, could play music with actual PC turned off, and really didn’t look like a computer at all. Capturing the design trends of the mid-2000s with its orange-and-silver motifs, it managed to look just like Sony Ericsson Walkman phones introduced two years later. With all its noughties zeitgeist, it, frankly, still doesn’t look bad, unlike most computers not designed in Cupertino.<\/p>\n<div class=\"e2-text-picture\">\n<img src=\"https:\/\/blog.ylitvinenko.com\/pictures\/msimega@2x.jpg\" width=\"531\" height=\"421\" alt=\"\" \/>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"foot\">The system included a floppy drive faceplate to replace the card reader with. How’s that for a media rig?<\/p>\n<p>While PC building community was excited about attractive hardware, Microsoft had its own plans on the software side of things – but they also craved for tighter control over the specifications of media PCs. Released in 2002 and updated over the course of three years, Windows XP Media Center Edition was a modified desktop OS with several new applications bundled – most notably, Windows Media Center, a media hub designed specifically for a TV screen. While being heavily marketed, Windows XP MCE was only available to select few licensed manufacturers. The list of companies and countries expanded release after release, but still, few official Windows media PCs were built. As for power users, they were left relying on third-party or homegrown solutions.<\/p>\n<p>The shell itself, while being rather nice and polished, wasn’t as exciting as the hardware made for it. For the first time, Microsoft set the specification for a Windows media remote, complete with a green, bubbly “flag” button for invoking the signature ten-feet UI. Following the standard, media center manufacturers made their own remotes to suit the style of the specific machine, but there was also some first-party hardware, including the keyboard with the integrated remote and pointing stick mouse. Microsoft has also pushed for creating Media Center Extenders, set-top boxes for streaming from a Windows XP MCE machine, and released software extenders for the original Xbox and Xbox 360.<\/p>\n<div class=\"e2-text-picture\">\n<img src=\"https:\/\/blog.ylitvinenko.com\/pictures\/microsoftremotekeyboard.jpg\" width=\"2276\" height=\"820\" alt=\"\" \/>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"foot\">Microsoft’s two-handed Remote Keyboard got one Genius lookalike and no successors.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft might have been disappointed with the market performance of Windows XP MCE, as it made the next version of Media Center, released alongside Windows Vista, available as a part of two of four retail versions. That version of Media Center, as well as the updated one for much more popular Windows 7, became the introduction to ten-feet UI for many people, especially as notebooks became prevalent and HDMI made connecting them to TVs a breeze.<\/p>\n<p>There is another feature Microsoft tried to make a standard, but to put it bluntly, it was such a mess, no one mentions it since. Windows SideShow was a Windows Vista technology for auxiliary displays on computer cases. Looking back on barebone PCs, it made sense to make a system-wide standard for their front panels, but Microsoft decided to push for always-on second screens on notebooks instead. The idea was to let users read the notifications by looking on a two-line screen on a notebook side (back when they were thick enough to put a display there) or use it as a media player with the lid closed. Aside from that, developers have envisioned other use cases for Windows SideShow, including connected photo frames, detachable media players, and mobile phone sync. None of them, for some reason, included what was already done by barebone PC manufacturers, and other ones were just too silly to be adopted en masse.<\/p>\n<div class=\"e2-text-picture\">\n<img src=\"https:\/\/blog.ylitvinenko.com\/pictures\/sideshow@2x.jpg\" width=\"466\" height=\"469\" alt=\"\" \/>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"foot\">Asus W5fe was the only notebook brave enough to feature a SideShow panel.<\/p>\n<p>One of Microsoft’s media efforts became popular because of notebooks, the other was rightfully ridiculed. Either way, it’s notebooks and the expanding mobility of computing which marked the end of media PCs. At first, people realized they don’t want their computers to be near a TV, on a desk, or in any fixed positions. Once the smartphones and mobile Internet services became hugely popular, they wondered why it has to be PC at all. As of home appliances, they become more capable and self-sufficient and caught up with PCs in features which mattered – not in the number of errors, conflicts, and prerequisite actions.<\/p>\n<h2>We should have seen them not coming<\/h2>\n<p>As the PC world waged a war on home appliances, Apple – which, in 2004, was making computers which weren’t PCs – introduced its own ten-feet UI, Front Row. Compared to Windows Media Center, it was dull, did not have DVR capabilities, and was seen as a reason to bundle that fancy iPod-like magnetic remote with the latest iMac. Unimaginable for its time, Microsoft’s solution had more eye candy than Apple’s one. It turned out to be more prolific, too: while Windows Media Center hanged around till the release of Windows 10, Front Row was dropped four years earlier. Even SideShow outlived it by two years.<\/p>\n<p>Isn’t it strange the company which created the iPod and iTunes was playing catch up with Microsoft on a media field? Looking back, it seems they knew what they were doing and what can be left half-baked. After all, while Microsoft tried to counter iPods with <a href=\"https:\/\/electronics.howstuffworks.com\/gadgets\/audio-music\/pmc2.htm\">pocket versions of Windows Media Center<\/a>, the House of Jobs evolved them into the iPhone, with well-known consequences for the entire tech world. Netflix, Spotify, and other streaming services finished the job and eradicated the concept of personal media collections in every household.<\/p>\n<p>Media PCs promised entertainment strongholds for content feudals. What people wanted is a receiver.<\/p>\n",

            "content_html": "<p>A year ago, I was “happy” to get a position as a sales manager trainee on local radio. “At least I’ll be employed,” I was saying to myself, “and then I’ll get a chance to actually become a journalist.” After a dreadful, pointless month of spamming businesses with cold calls and not bringing a kopek to my employer, the future seemed grim.<\/p>\n<p>Now, however, I can say with confidence: not only, after almost a decade of writing commercially, I work as a full-time journalist, I’ve actually <i>become<\/i> one. I’ve got the gist of the profession, fully assured myself that’s what I want to do for a living and started improving my skills in this specific field. Besides simply writing for a local newspaper and web outlet, I’m happy to have an experience of acting as their editor-in-chief for a few weeks. I am also enjoying writing for other outlets – and in English, too.<\/p>\n<p>I don’t want to confuse my English-speaking readers with Russian articles they cannot read. Thankfully, my most important piece was written for the international audience. My <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/news\/2018\/11\/feature_inside_the_twisted_and_abusive_culture_of_yasha_haddajis_nintendo_russia\">report on the abusive culture<\/a> inside Nintendo’s Russian division sparked a corporate investigation on it’s General Manager, Yasha Haddaji, and so far made him go radio silent.
